The public challenges require a specific class or even a specific car to participate – if you don't own a car that matches you can't enter (and the car must not be in use in another event). For the career championship you get to pick any car you own.If you finish the championiship in the first 3 places you get to do one on the next difficulty level, otherwise you keep repeating at that difficulty (but the events and stages get randomized each time). They start with the AI at the lowest difficulty. The career championships are sets of 6 or more events with 4+ stages each. That car will remain in use for as long as that event hasn't finished (or you abandon it), and you can't use it for other career events. When you start a career event you're asked to pick a car.You can't swap snow tires for anything else. It's generally not a good idea to not use wet tires for wet unless you really know what you're doing. Try out soft/medium/hard tires to see how you like them. Check out the weather and conditions for the following stages until the next service point. You can and should change tires at each service point.Damage accumulated while on track remains between shakedowns and after events and needs to be repaired constantly.Other upgrades need to be purchased manually (tuning and more durable components) for a one time cost.

You're restricted to cars you own (but on the plus side the games starts you off with a rather large garage). The "career" in DR2 is a bit of a gimmick.
